Retro Fun: Pokemon Ruby
Just for fun we've been going back anbd playing some of the older Game Boy Advance versions of Pokemon on the Nintendo DS lately. One of the reasons is that you can import rare Hoenn region Pokemon into the Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum editions of the game using the PalPark feature. Having one of these carts in the DS's GBA slot also makes different rare Pokemon appear (after you've defeated the Elite 4).
Aside from the normal battling, Pokemon Ruby has a plot outlined by the villains, Team Magma, wanting to use the legendary Pokemon Groudon to dry up the oceans of the Hoenn region. Your mission as you explore and get stronger then is to prevent their evil plans!
Considering this game dates back to 2003 (in North America) the gameplay is still pretty darn good and loads of fun. It has a retro-fun feel compared to the current generation of Pokemon games but you don't feel too hobbled by only having one screen and a fewer special features.
